Rosarito Childrens Center for Displaced KidsRancho del Nino Nueva Vida - Rosarito Childrens Center
My Adventure to the "Rancho del Nino Nueva Vida" aka the Rosarito Center for Homeless Children It all started about a week or so ago when I was reading an article on the Baja Animal Sanctuary and how it was being run out of its location and possibly in danger of being shut down by Mexican officials. The Baja Animal Sanctuary aka "BAS" takes care of homeless cats and dogs and helps find loving homes for them with families in both the states and in Mexico. When I read an article in The Gringo Gazette (an awesome newspaper in Baja for Gringos featuring local events, news & things to do www.gringogazettenorth.com in Baja Mexico) also about the possible closure of the animal sanctuary and about how some children from a local childrens center required medicine for a skin rash developed from the dogs down the road at BAS. The cost of the medicine was $58.00 and the lady from the shelter, Dr. Beatrice Morales, was upset because the shelter was working from a $400.00 a month budget. The Gringo Gazette is a local Baja newspaper which had detailed sources to local news in Rosarito and what the conditions were that were drawing critisism to the "BAS" animal shelter. I was miffed when I read the article and said "how do you possibly raise 21, (which I soon was to learn 22) kids on a $400.00 a month budget?". I decided I would venture down to Rosarito to try to find the place that The Gringo Gazette had written about and find out exactly how the 22 kids lived and what there living conditions were like. That's kind of where the story starts because as a gringo who speaks no spanish I was not about to venture to the outskirts of Rosarito to find a place I had never been and had no address for. That's where good old Leo the cab driver comes in. He drives the banana boat cab for tourists so you know he is bilingual and I thought with $10.00 down to help get the info we would be on our way. Leo said we would need to go to the tourism office in Rosarito to get the info since he was not aware of New Horizon Ranch place. After about 25 minutes of calls at the tourist center we finally struck gold when the lady working there said she had found the location. The lady had been working effortlessly trying to call places she thought may know of the location. "It is by the Baja Animal Sanctuary", Leo said. We just were not sure if it was by the "old" animal sanctuary location or by the "new" animal sanctuary location, which was unknown to everyone. We would have to try to look around the "old" BAS location since it was the only option. I knew that was a cruise and that it would be on some very rugged dirt roads that can easily wash out and be only accessible with 4 wheel drive ability. I was just happy she had found the place. She had made about 6 calls or more and each time she would get a no from the number she tried. I was very close to giving up hope and was thinking about just bringing the groceries to the tourist location to hold on to until I could contact someone at the childrens center to come pick them up. "She was on her last try", Leo said chuckling as we headed back out to the cab, "she got the number from the police" he said as we loaded up in his "banana cab" and prepared to get a bigger car and some groceries I grabbed in the states down the street. Here is a picture of Leo driving us to the Rosarito Tourist Center.
"Ah... Leo is this safe to drive over to the cab stands" I asked seeing that the groceries on the seats would be loose and one sharp turn would send stuff scattering all over the street. "No problem" he replied.
I was watching him load this with the bunjee cord and while he was doing it I was having visions of 150.00+ worth of Smart and Final groceries spilling out all over the streets in Rosarito only to have the donation "diverted". "Please God, just get us 3 blocks down the road to where the big cab cars are and I will be very happy".
Leo had other plans and convinced me the banana cab was able to do some 4 wheeling in the way outer linits of rural Rosarito. Wow, well "okay" I thought as I tried to get within grabbing reach of most of the stuff should we take a sharp turn. Here is a small clump of houses just outside of town on the east side heading into the hills. I knew where the old BAS location was and it was in the middle of no where out in a remote valley about 3 1/2 miles outside of Rosarito. This was going to be an "interesting" trip to say the least.
The local grocery store. This is where Leo got some locals to help us find the location of the childrens center. A young girl with 2 small children said she would take us there and I promptly gave her a tin of carmel corn as a bonus gift for her help. She spoke no english but smiled when the tin was placed in her hands. She had two little ones with her who were happily tearing into some snacks she had just purchased at what was the local "store" in the area. It was a very quiet and peaceful area with chickens and roosters running around and the few locals hanging out watching kids play and preparing for dark. If you look close you can see a chicken standing in the front door of the store outside of town. Photo by Rosarito Beach Online
Okay, now we know where we are going and it is going to get very rugged on some of the dirt roads we are getting ready to hit. Photo by Rosarito Beach Online

Here is a look at some of the roads going down the side of one of the large hills. The ruts in sone spots are so deep that the banana cab could have easily "lost a tranny" had it strayed over a few inches ot either side in many locations going down the road. Photo by Rosarito Beach Online
We made it. Our tour guide knew some of the kids and told them we were here. While the kids started loading groceries, Leo choked down a cig and thanked God he still had a tranny in the banana cab. Photo by Rosarito Beach Online

The dining area of the center. The area was very clean and the kids said that each morning and in the afternoons they are doing chores to keep the place clean. Photo by Rosarito Beach Online
One of the bedroom areas. This was one of the bedroom areas. The kids are in desperate need of warm blankets since there is no heat in any of the buildings the kids are in. The floors are all concrete slabs and there are just thin windows keeping the cold out at night. For those not familiar with this area, it does get very cold in the winter time months with temps going as low as the 30's and the air is very damp with the ocean being so close by. For those in a position to donate, these places could use some little space heaters and even some used carpet to walk on.
More of the beds for the kids in the same room. Kids are just grateful to have a bed and shelter and they all seem to get a along well and enjoy each others company. Photo by Rosarito Beach Online
This is where the little kids sleep. This area also has no heat and these kids also need more blankets in here along with a space heater and some used carpet. Photo by Rosarito Beach Online
The kids can also use some pillows along with blankets as you can see many beds using wrapped up clothing for a headrest. Photo by Rosarito Beach Online
This is the classroom the kids have for their Bible classes. This classroom could use some eraser boards and perhaps a nice picture or two. Photo by Rosarito Beach Online
This is where the kids do their laundry. The kids who do not go to school stay back and help do the cleaning, including daily laundry the old fashioned way. Photo by Rosarito Beach Online
The back area of the childrens center. The small building on the right where the clothes line attach is the bathroom and shower area. The back of that building is storage and where the water heaters are. Sometimes the kids can get them to go on for about 20 minutes before shutting off, but not long enough to get the water hot. Photo by Rosarito Beach Online
This is the ladies bathroom. The have 2 toilets and the shower stall in the background. If there is anyone who is good at electrical work or tiling work they could use some volunteers to help spruce this place up starting with fixing or replacing the hot water heater which does not work or allow for the kids to have warm showers. Photo by Rosarito Beach Online
The mens restroom. This is where the boys go to take showers and use the restroom. If anyone is good at doing light construction, this would be a good place to start with fix ups. This area could use a new water heater so the kids go get hot showers, some heat, paint and perhaps some new tile in the shower stall area? We will raise money on the website for the hard costs if anyone out there is available to donate some labor to get the job done. You can email us at Rosarito Childrens Fund if there is something you can do to fix this. Come spend a weekend in Rosarito and take a few hours during the day to do some volunteer work. Photo by Rosarito Beach Online
Leo and the head youth in charge walk towards the back of the restroom and shower building to look at the water heater. Photo by Rosarito Beach Online
The girls bedroom. Here is the bedroom the girls share together who take care of the kids. It is a very humble place with a few scarce possesions laying around like a few stuffed animals and a couple of books. The room was actually double the size of what is in the photo, but this was all the furniture they had. This area is also in need of heat and is a solid concrete slab for the floor so some used carpeting would also be helpful for the kids.
Clothes for 20+ kids ready to go. Here is the master dresser which is in a seperate room of the building. These are the clothes for all 22 kids in this one set of shelves. The kids are able to pick out something to wear each day from the pile and there is a constant need to keep washing clothes since they can only run out just a few days. The kids are in great need of socks, underwear, warm sweaters, and also shoes. I have nearly more clothes myself than these 22 kids (all boys) have combined, and I am sure I am not alone. If you can donate some clothes for the kids you can drop them off at our Pacific Beach office at 4475 Mission Blvd. #201. We are located right above Skechers Shoes on the corner of Garnet and Mission Blvd. If you would like to donate some money we will be buying things from local thrift stores and bringing it down as it comes. Make checks out to "Rosarito Childrens Fund". Click Here for a map and driving directions to our office * enter from the back of the building and look for the executive suites upstairs Photo by Rosarito Beach Online
Ouch! This is how many jackets the kids have and it is obvious this is not enough for 22 kids. With winter being on the verge of arriving these kids desperatly need some warm winter jackets and blankets. You can see that the only blankets left are tiny and more of shawls than actual warm blankets in the upper right hand corner. The kids ages start at around 2 and go up into the teens. There are about 10-11 kids 10 and under and about 10 or so that are in their early and late teens. The sizes all vary but anything that can fit any of them is welcomed The kid here was very humble and he could barely look at the camera when showing us what they were working with. When I was at this place it was getting very very cool. I had a warm sweatshirt and a t-shirt underneath and was still a tad bit chilly. These kids were running around in t-shirts and this is all they have for warm jackets. These areas get VERY cold in the winter and fall months which we are in now. We would like to be able to get some warm jackets for the kids at the local Goodwill thrift store on Garnet Avenue. If you can donate some money or would like to drop off some jackets, sweatshirts or anything else useful please feel free to stop by our Pacific Beach offices and ask for Laura. You may call us for more info at 858-274-5439. These areas of Rosarito get very cold and damp in addition to getting rain. Any help you can contribute is greatly appreciated. We will be doing follow up articles on the shelter and showing more info about each child and what their story is on how they arrived in addition to showing the new donations of clothes and help fixing up the place. Some of the older kids hang out in the courtyard area. The other kids had not yet arrived back from school. Photo by Rosarito Beach Online
Here is a picture of the kids that were there when we arrived. When I heard the story I was not sure what to expect. What I found out was that these kids have all banded together to try to make each others lives easier. The kids are very hard working and they keep the place very clean for what they have to work with. They are just normal kids who want to be kids, but need a little love and help to have the normal comforts kids their age should have. Check back as we do follow up stories of this kids shelter and document each child and what they are in need of and thier personal stories. Dude, what can I do to help? 1. Donate $$$ 2. Donate clothing 3. Donate time or labor Call Laura at 858-274-5439 if you have a donation you would like to drop off or if you can help with any labor needed to fix the place up. As we cruised back into town I told Leo to pull over so I could get this photo at around sunset above the city. Photo by Rosarito Beach Online
Mexico is a special place. As we drove back into town I reflected on our journey and the family of kids that lived a very different and humble life very close to my own home in the states. Photo by Rosarito Beach Online
"Leo, I am buying dinner", I said as we headed to town. "You can be my food critic and we will do a write up on a nice restaurant". "No problem", he replied as I threw another 10 bucks in his jacket. Leo had a little one also and was working on better than 4 hours from when our journey first started. He was another guy who was trying to do his best to provide for his family. The tourist season in the winter months can be a little slow "Leo, I will put you up on the Rosarito Beach Online.com website and promote visitors to call and use you anytime they need anything when in Rosarito". If Leo could help me find that place, he can find any place and plus he is a super cool and friendly guy who is billingual. If I had not found Leo, chances are I wouild have had to do more homework before finding the childrens shelter and this trip would have been a bust. Photo by Rosarito Beach Online
"Leo, one last photo by the Banana Cab so I can promote your services". If you get down to Rosarito and you need anything call Leo Ramirez (01152) 661-113-3254 Home (01152) 661-113-3254 Office * When Leo is working he can normally be found in front of the Rosarito Beach Hotel or in that area on the main drag of the tourist section in front of Festival Plaza.
Leo can take you anywhere and he does not mind doing border pick ups or going into Tijuana.
