Located about 4 miles south of downtown Rosarito sits a hotel, restaurant and small shopping area which sit on an old Catholic Mission established in 1773 called "Calafia".

Calafia is a legendary place in Baja California famous for its great lobster lunches and dinners and most of all spectacular views of the Baja California coastline. Come take a look at this historic place with us as we walk around and have lunch.

The Mission at Calafia

Calafia, according to an old legend was the Queen of a mythical island called California.
Today it is the name of the only Mexican Theme Park at the Californias.

The history of the area goes back over 6,000 years. Here is a brief overview.

7,000-6,000 B.C.
The First inhabitants of the area the Cochimies -San Dieguito 111 type arrive to the Rosarito and Baja California area.

Pre historic paintings of Baja California are complemented in Calafia with diverse anthropological samples of mesoamerican cultures like the Aztec, Olmeca and Maya.

In 1542 Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo explores the south coast and discovers San Diego Bay.

In 1602 Viceroy Gaspar de Zuniga y Acevedo Count of Monterrey, entrust Sebastian Vizciano the completion of the cartography and Nomenclature of California.

In 1697 The Spanish Throne grants the Jesuits a special liscence to evangelize California.

On October 25th the Loretto Mission is founded, ever since it has been known as "The Mother and Head of the California Missions.

Friar Francisco Palou

In 1773 Friar Francisco Palou establishes the first division of the New and the Old California. It was a division made between the territories of the Franciscan and Dominican Missions. It went across the hill behind Calafia to the "point that falls to the beach". This made the land in Calafia and very important and significant landmark.

A Wedding at Calafia Baja California

Calafia is a historic and cultural center which is administrated by the Acevedo Foundation, a private Mexican association whose ultimate goal is to promote universal values and rich heritage of the Mexican Culture.

Here is a view of one of the little courtyards which offer coffee shops, gift shops and a new and very vibrant art gallery.

The view from the restaurant area looking south down the Baja coastline. This is easily one of the best views on the Southern California coastline, if not the best of them all!

A replica of the Spanish ship "Corona Aurea" sits in the lower right corner and is a tourist attraction for photos as it has an upper deck which people can climb up to and "set sail".

Calafia Historical Landmark

Your table for two is ready at Calafia.

With this being ONLY 45 minutes to an hour south of San Diego you need to come down and spend an afternoon or just an hour or two at this beautiful location.

We took off to Calafia and after getting down there and eating we were back home within 3 hours...not too bad from Pacific Beach.

If you go down during the week the border crossing is not that bad ranging from 1/2 hour to 45 minutes to cross if you get back by 3ish. Not bad for a nice change of pace from San Diego.

Calafia welcomes over 3,000 tours and 250,000 visitors a year from around the world, who discover the warm hospitality.

Calafia's master architectural plan involves the "Missions Square" with replicas of facades of the twelve missions along the "Camino Real Misional" particulary the "Nuestra Senora de Loreto de Concho Mission".

The Calafia Hotel is a quaint place with only 70 rooms but great service. There is a small pool and of course great food.
The property also has an awesome formal dining area for evenings when you want to dress up and enjoy a great dinner with outstanding views and a comfortable enviroment.

Hotel room rates range from 60 dollars for a regular room on the weekdays to 200 dollars a night for their upgraded suits.

There is a tiny pool which is suitable for cooling off while sunbathing and Rosarito and Puerto Neuvo are both within 10 minutes offering a wide selection of other places to visit and shop.
